ISSCC is the abbreviation of “IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference, International Solid-State Circuits Conference”. It is the highest-level conference in the field of integrated circuit design recognized by the world academia and business circles. The place where the most cutting-edge solid-state circuit technology was first published. Because ISSCC has received great attention in the international academic and industrial circles, it is called the Olympic Games of the integrated circuit industry.
ISSCC2021 will be held online from February 13th to 22nd this year. A total of 202 papers were accepted in this conference, and 23 papers were accepted by institutions in China (Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau) as the first unit. Among them are 6 from Tsinghua University, 4 from Peking University, 3 from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, 2 from Zhejiang University, 2 from University of Macau, East China Institute of Electronic Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, University of Science and Technology of China, Institute of Microelectronics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Low Power Consumption 1 article each for the Technical Research Institute and Baidu Company. From the perspective of technical fields, the relatively large proportions of papers in mainland China are radio frequency, data conversion and machine learning. There are 5, 3, and 3 articles selected respectively.
ISSCC2020 has established a new independent technical group meeting for “Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence”. So far, the technical classification of ISSCC has reached 12 categories, including analog design (ANA), power management (PM), wireless transmission (WLS), and data conversion. Device (DC), Forward-looking Technology (TD), Radio Frequency Technology (RF), Digital Circuit (DCT), Image, MEMS, Medical, Display (IMMD), and Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML), Storage (MEM), Wired Transmission (WLN) and Digital System (DAS).
With the continuous development of my country’s integrated circuit field, the level of academic research is also constantly advancing. In the past 6 years, among the accepted papers for ISSCC conferences, papers from institutions in Mainland China have been on the rise. Since 2016, the number of accepted papers in each year has been 2, 2, 5, 9, 15, and 21.
In 2021, the domestic selected papers cover 10 technical categories, including 5 radio frequency technology, 3 power management, 3 data converters, 3 wireless transmission, 3 machine learning and artificial intelligence, 2 digital systems, digital 1 circuit, 1 forward-looking technology, 1 analog design, and 1 storage.
ISSCC2021 has accepted 22 articles in the RF field, which are divided into four categories, namely high-performance voltage-controlled oscillators, terahertz circuits and front-ends, RF power amplifiers and front-end technologies, and frequency synthesizers. Five papers were selected in mainland China this year, two from the team of Professor Luo Xun from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and one each from the University of Macau, Tsinghua University and Peking University.
A total of 14 papers were accepted in the field of data converters, including 3 papers from China, from Tsinghua University, Peking University, and University of Macau.
The 13 papers in the field of machine learning are divided into 2 categories, from cloud-to-end machine learning processors and deep neural network in-memory computing. There are 3 selected articles in Mainland China, all from Tsinghua University.
24 papers in the field of wireless transmission, including sub-6Ghz, millimeter wave, ultra-wideband and terahertz technologies. A total of 3 papers in the millimeter wave field in mainland China were selected, from Tsinghua University, Southeast University, and East China Institute of Electronic Engineering.
18 papers were accepted in the field of power management, divided into two categories: DC-DC converters and high voltage, GaN and wireless charging. Zhejiang University, Southeast University and University of Science and Technology of China each have one paper accepted.
A total of 16 papers in the storage field were selected, divided into 4 categories: in-memory computing, advanced embedded storage, dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and non-volatile storage. One of the advanced embedded storage was from the Institute of Microelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Digital Circuits (DCT) and Digital Systems (DAS) each were selected, from Nanjing Low Power Chip Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (reconfigurable AI processor). In addition, Digital Systems (DAS) also has an invited paper from Baidu (Universal AI Chip Kunlun).
Looking back at the ISSCC situation in the past few years, the number of accepted papers in my country has been increasing, or the number of admission institutions has also been increasing, which also reflects the continuous improvement of my country’s integrated circuit research level, and more and more research has reached the international leading level. It is believed that the improvement of research level will continue to promote the rapid development of my country’s integrated circuit industry.
